South Florida's scorching heat poses a hidden threat to cancer survivors, a new study reveals. The research, conducted by the University of Miami, sheds light on the challenges faced by cancer patients in the region's oppressive climate. Participants in the study described a range of coping mechanisms, from relying heavily on air conditioning to cutting back on social activities and rescheduling appointments to avoid the peak heat of the day. This is particularly concerning given that certain cancer medications can lower heat tolerance, and the impact of intense treatments like chemotherapy and radiation on heat sensitivity is still unclear.
The study's lead investigator, Kilan Ashad-Bishop, highlights the severe consequences of heat exposure for cancer survivors. Just a short 30-45 minute outing can trigger brain fog and exhaustion, forcing some patients indoors for the rest of the day. Others are so sensitive to the sun that one participant described it as "sucking the life out of him." In extreme cases, heat-induced seizures have led to hospitalizations, as experienced by one participant with recurring lymphoma, who went by the pseudonym Anita for privacy.
The study also reveals the psychological impact of heat on cancer survivors. Spending more time at home, often alone, can contribute to isolation and other mental health challenges. This is exacerbated by the need to avoid physical activities encouraged by doctors, such as walking for exercise, due to the physical toll of being outside. As a result, survivors often schedule essential errands early in the morning or later in the evening to avoid peak temperatures.
The study's findings underscore the need for healthcare professionals to consider environmental factors like heat when working with cancer patients. Most participants reported that conversations about heat risks were rare, and previous research has shown that cancer patients and survivors may be especially vulnerable to heat-related illness due to difficulties regulating body temperature, medicine-related dehydration and fatigue, and financial constraints from high medical bills that can make it hard to pay energy bills.
Felicia Casanova, a co-investigator on the study, emphasizes the importance of empowering patients to ask more questions about how heat may interact with their treatment plans. This includes considering the impact of climate change, which is significantly increasing the number of dangerously hot days in South Florida, and the lack of relief offered by nights. The study's findings suggest that additional education and energy assistance programs may be necessary to help cancer patients with their air conditioning bills.
Despite the limitations of the study, including the small sample size of 20 participants, the research highlights the urgent need for further investigation into the impact of heat on cancer patients. As Kilan Ashad-Bishop notes, the study is a starting point for understanding the complex relationship between heat and cancer, and it underscores the importance of making heat a part of the cancer conversation.
